New accommodation ‘Shalom’

Shalomjust next to the main building at ‘The Haven’ enables 6 extra young men to be helped. It provides a first stage in ‘moving on’ – still within the care and support of the team at ‘The Haven’.

‘Shalom’ is a Hebrew word meaning ‘peace’ (safety, health & wholeness); on moving from ‘The Haven’ to ‘Shalom’, we hope our residents will safely continue their journey into ‘peace’ & ‘wholeness’ in God!

Shalom is purpose built accommodation enabling residents who have completed approximately 6 months at The Haven to move onto phases 3 and 4. During this time the challenge is to suitably equip each resident with the life skills needed to enable the transition from supported to independent living to be as smooth as possible.

This is done on a 1-2-1 basis by addressing 8 areas of life that impact on the resident. One of the areas we address together is the residents’ educational needs with a view to future employment. Currently the residents are all undertaking computer based training at St Stephen’s Enterprise Centre in Port Glasgow. In addition 1 of the residents is undertaking a maths evening class and 2 residents have been allocated places for courses to be held at James Watt College.

The residents recently met with representatives from APEX Scotland and plan to utilise their expertise in confidence and team building areas.

Other areas include residents’ health – this includes a healthy eating regime and a fitness programme.

So what is the move from The Haven to Shalom really like?

I asked the residents to add to the following statements:-

“Living in Shalom is like …..”

Their responses are as follows:-

“Living in a home not a house”

“Staying at a good family’s”

“Yazoo strawberry milkshakes – you couldn’t get much better”

And finally I asked the residents “My time at Shalom compared to my time at The Haven has been …..”

Again their responses:-

“Good – I have more responsibility and learned how to use my time wisely. I also get to visit home once a month to see my family.”

“I have grown as a person and I have become more responsible.”

“A lot more challenging to say the least as I have been up and down like a yo-yo!”

Your opportunity is to invest in men’s lives by contributing financially or providing a loan to allow this project to continue.

A total of £160,000 is needed for Shalom. So far £100,000 has been committed.

Thank you to all those who have responded to this appeal and generously given.

Haven Charity Superstore

Port Glasgow 01475 744833

Wednesday April 14th 2010 marks the third year of the Haven Superstore raising funds for The Haven Kilmacolm. It’s been a hard trading year for most in retail but our stores have been busy.

Recently we won another award from The Scottish Charity Business Awards, awarded by the Charity Retail Consortium. This award for ‘innovation and business planning’ was won due to our business development in the local market.

The store traded extremely well in 2009, donating much needed funds into The Haven Kilmacolm. Our customers helped with great donations of stock and via Gift Aid further funds have been claimed from the tax man.

Our work progresses but we still need MORE; good quality furniture, clothing and electrical goods – all you can donate. These items will be turned into hard cash to keep the good work of The Haven Kilmacolm going.
